1. Recognize/Prioritize:
The first step is to recognize there is a problem or need and then to prioritize doing something about it.
Conference and event organizers can start by recognizing caretaker and children’s struggles; and including childcare as a collective concern in their planning. What are you doing? How does childcare intersect with that.
Recognize that larger systems of oppression (racism, sexism, ageism, classism, and other forms of oppression) affect everything. Everything affects everything. Everything is also a childcare issue.
Where are the children and caregivers? How do caregiver, children, and other social justice issues intersect? Who is missing from this conversation and why?
START EARLY! Childcare planning should start at the beginning of conference planning, along with other important logistics, and not as an afterthought.
Over time we developed a form that outlined what our expectations and requirements were in order to consider partnering with others. This helped immensely. Not only did it give us a first step to be contacted by – but also information to consider at a collective core meeting before deciding if we could take this on or not.
